Top of the Pops was first broadcast on New Years Day 1964.

19th March 1964. Three new cities are proposed for south east England as part of the largest regional expansion plan in Britain. The 'new towns' eventually created were Milton Keynes, Havant and Basingstoke.

March 28th 1964 Radio Caroline starts broadcasting.

16th April 1964 The Great Train Robbers get sentences totalling 307 years. The 12 men who stole £2.6m in used bank notes after holding up the night mail train travelling from Glasgow to London in August 1963.

BBC2 started broadcasting on April 20 1964.

12th of June The leader of the anti-apartheid struggle in South Africa, Nelson Mandela, was jailed for life for sabotage.

The Post office tower was being built and reached its final height on July 15, 1964.

The Olympic Games were held in Tokyo in August 1954. Kenneth Mathews Ann Packer, Lyn Davies, and Mary Bignal-Rand won gold medals we also won 12 Silver and 22 Bronze finishing in tenth place overall.

4th September 1964 The Forth Road Bridge opens.

The Sun Newspaper is born on the 15th of September replacing the Daily Herald.
